Pumpkin Picking
My heart just loves the fall season. I think the only thing holding me back from saying that it’s my favorite season is the ominous feeling that winter is quickly approaching behind it, and when it comes to winter, I love it for about two months, and then I feel that it has well overstayed its welcome (and that’s usually just the beginning of it here in PA).
I love that when it comes to fall, my family spends just as much time outside as we do in the summer, but there are more planned activities. The apple picking, the leaf raking, the abundance of delicious food from the harvest season, the vibrant colors of fall, but especially, the PUMPKINS.
The picture of the giant pumpkin above is one that always pops into my head when I think of fall. One of the coolest things about raising Lilly in the same town I grew up in, is carrying on some of the very same traditions my family had when I was a child.
As a child, it wasn’t officially fall until we saw the big pumpkin in all its glory followed by rows and rows of the brightest and biggest orange pumpkins on the side of the road as we would drive to school.
This year, as I was taking Lilly to preschool one day, she let out the most excited cry as she saw the big pumpkin for the first time. It’s just one of those small memories that make my heart so happy to share with her.
Every year, we head to our favorite pumpkin patch. We always search for four pumpkins to carve and then grab a few smaller pumpkins. We even found a pink pumpkin this year (pictured above).
Lilly often gets so excited when we pick pumpkins that she runs from one row to another. This often leads to her trying to pick up a pumpkin that is heavier than she is.
This year she insisted that we buy Indian corn and a few additional gourds to add to our “huge” collection (gourds seem to be her thing this year).
I couldn’t resist grabbing a pink, white and green pumpkin. Can you blame me? Look at these beauties!
These special traditions combined with the beauty of the fall harvest season are a few of the reasons that autumn is always warmly welcomed in our family.
Alex and Lilly have taken this same picture at the pumpkin patch for five years now. I can’t believe how much she has grown.
With our many wagons full of beautiful pumpkins, we headed home to decorate our front walkway for fall!
