Is there anything better than taking your kids to the pumpkin patch in the fall? Maybe it’s genetics at work but I have two fall-obsessed, pumpkin-loving kids. Taking them to pick pumpkins is a true highlight every year for me.
When Lilly was three years old, we came across a local farm that created their own ‘pumpkin house’. After visiting their sunflower maze in the summer, we decided to head back to Smithmyers in 2017 to pick pumpkins. The drive to Patton, PA is always stunning and if you go in late September or early October, the foliage is usually showing off.
Our first year visiting Smithmyer’s in the fall, we discovered that they grow giant pumpkins you can purchase. My husband, who as a financial advisor, tends to grumble about every purchase we make; could not contain his excitement and was insistent on buying a giant pumpkin from Smithmyer’s.
Now, it is a neighborhood staple that adorns our front yard every fall, inviting neighborhood kids to come take a look.
This year we headed out to Smithmyer’s on the first day of fall on the hunt for the ‘Great Pumpkin’. This has been such an exciting fall because Lane now enthusiastically understands what pumpkin patches are all about. The kids had the best time chasing the Smithmyer family’s sweet puppy around the field by the pumpkin house, and picking arms full of pumpkins.
It was such a good evening that I truly will never forget. If you ever get the chance to visit Smithmyer’s, be sure to take it. You will be welcomed by the kindest family and find the best pumpkins.
