Happy Saturday, Lovelies!
It’s another Saturday, which means the second Coffee with Kalyn post! When thinking about what I wanted to share with you all this week, I kept laughing about one particular moment to start the post off.
Real Life with Kalyn:
Wednesday started off as one of those mornings where nothing really goes right. Lilly woke up feeling adversarial, the dog was refusing to do her business and somewhere in the midst of the morning rush out the door, I forgot Lilly’s backpack for school…AND TO BRUSH MY TEETH.
As I was driving Lilly to school, I remembered, and exclaimed, “I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO BRUSH MY TEETH”.
When we arrived at school, I then noticed that I also had forgotten Lilly’s backpack. So, as a mild form of punishment, Lilly announced to everyone at school (teachers and parents alike) that her mommy had forgotten to brush her teeth that morning.
Why is any of this important? I think social media allows us to paint a pretty picture of our lives. We post the highlight reel and from others’ perspectives, we might seemingly live a perfect life full of vacations, no work and a family that is always smiling.
My reality is that I walk out of my house without brushing my hair a lot. Sometimes I forget to brush my teeth. Sometimes our day goes as planned, but most of the time it doesn’t. But you know what? I am 100% okay with that, and everything in life that isn’t part of my online highlight reel.
For me, it means that my life is filled with so many blessings, and those blessings sometimes rely on me for their care. So for now, I’ll help Lilly brush her teeth, and try to keep my mouth closed when I forget to brush mine.
My Weekly Inspiration:
I started working for Stitch Fix and my blog within a week’s time of one another in September of 2017. I promised myself (and my daughter) that when she was home from school (and not taking a nap) that I would not let either job interfere with the time I spend with her. I make sure to log out of work or not check my phone when I am with her after school because I know these years go so quickly, and I want to be fully present for her.
Earlier I mentioned that we often see another person’s “highlight reel” on social media. It’s easy to feel less than or wish for what we see on Facebook or Instagram, but I challenge you to take some time over the weekend and ponder over what makes YOU special. It might feel weird to list your strengths at first, but I guarantee you will treat yourself with a little bit more grace and compare a little bit less after.
This quote really resonated with me this week. I kept thinking about how hard I work to earn a paycheck. It’s obviously important to work, so don’t quit your job because of me, but think about how often we place work in front of our family, friends and even health. A job that probably could replace us in a heartbeat. This made me stop in my tracks and helped me to be more mindful of where I was exerting my energy this week.
